Day Nineteen – You Name It, We Eat It

June 22nd; Another late morning, since we’re all stuffed from not doing much the other night. I do not know how that works. It’s probably metaphysical or quantum or something.

We are meeting Natasha and Gabriel again today. They talked up this pancake place at the party and so everyone wanted to go. We were extraordinarily late as usual, but that was okay since there was a two hour wait for a table. It was called Clinton Street Bakery or something along those lines, near a big red bridge. Might have been the Manhattan Bridge. We went to a coffee and chocolate place in the meantime. I got a dark hot chocolate. It was good but, more than most hot chocolates, severely inhibited my walking skills. We walked to a park nearby. Natasha used to live near here, it seems.

All the dogs in New York are like cartoon characters. They all seems wonderfully groomed, they all look funny in some way and they all have big grins on their face. Most of them seem to get along as well. It’s odd. Maybe all the fine particles of smog-creating chemicals gently comb their fur as they walk around. I don’t know. They seem to be loving life more than any of their owners though. The boys kept chasing squirrels. Nat told us that there are black ones. We were walking ahead of the boys a bit. Once we were out of the park they caught up and said they had seen one! I was a little jealous.

We had to sit outside the pancake place for a while longer. I was pumped though. Natasha is allergic to Banana’s but really likes them, and apparently likes Banana pancakes anymore. She kept doing an impersonation of herself with an itchy tongue the day before which had me hit by the funny fist every time it came out. A frantic chewing off the tongue. It was grand and I wanted to see it for real. I got a buttermilk biscuit with egg and bacon, with a side of Chorizo. The Chorizo was off the hook, but the buttermilk biscuit was way too sweet. It did have wicked tomato jam on it though.

Apparently Natasha’s reaction wasn’t too bad so her tongue wasn’t going crazy. A huge disappointment for me, but it was a good ‘brunch’ anyway. We parted ways and headed home. Ben wanted me to check something in Times Square, so even though I was stuffed all the boys got off the subway and left Kate to fend for herself for something like three or four stops. Terrifying stuff. I bought Be Kind Rewind, the Michel Gondry movie with Jack Black and Mos Def. Didn’t get much of a release in Australia but it’s really good. We headed back to the hostel before too long.

There we met a French girl called Lea (pronounced more like Princess Leia though) who immediately gelled with us, an Spanish fellow called Karlos. It was their first night in the hostel, the first night in America for both as well I believe, and they were in our dorm. Poor bastards. Hendo, Ben and Ryan instantly fell in love with Lea’s skill at swearing in English but general inability to put together any other sentences. Karlos taught us some good Spanish words which have been in use for some time since then. Goger!

We went out and got some dinner before those two fell asleep. Japanese for Hendo, the two foreigners an I, Chinese for the others. Kate had another salad. Lame. I had eel sashimi, which was wicked. We stayed up for a while and talked. Hendo and I grabbed the couches to watch the movie with another French guy in our room, Hugo. It was good, again. Then we packed after everyone else was asleep, made lots of noise and went to bed.
